JenniferParticipantPerhaps it has to do with genetics, like the size and weight of their bones. I know that most white swimmers’ bones are lighter than other ethnic groups, so they’re good at swimming. That, and if they were raised to feel comfortable with their bodies, which it seems to me most white people weren’t. White women seem more comfortable dancing and what not, but not many white men. Dancing the way other groups do is ‘sexual’ to them, it appears. I’m sure it all comes down to physical anthropology and culture. Ballet is a perfect example of this. Your body has to be kept stiff, rather than the fluid movements you see with say, breakdancing.

JenniferParticipantThat is a very good point. After studying world religions, I agree that it has more to do with religion, which translates to culture and is what informs a people. Ancient cultures in particular, by being ancient, have obviously worked out a few more kinks than ‘newer’ peoples have. Look at the Jews. They do extraordinarily well, too, and many African immigrants, like the Yoruba, are highly educated as well. It can possibly be said that these groups have more of a sense of themselves, of their destiny as a people, what motivates them, a connection to the past and present and an understanding of their place in the universe. I could go on, but I’m getting too metaphysical here … carry on!

JenniferParticipantIn tribal and ancient Africa, animals were viewed not as pets or ‘things’ that could be owned, but as beings in the universe, like people. Pet ownership is slavery. ‘The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans anymore than blacks were made for whites or women for men.’ – Alice Walker
At least, that’s why I don’t own an animal.

JenniferParticipantMy daughter is half-Jewish, and I haven’t heard the Jews regarded as a race since maybe the Holocaust, only as an ethnicity. It is neither, in my opinion, but ethnicity is more correct (but I’d say that for all groups because I don’t believe in race; we’re all human). It begs the larger question, what is race? Which I think the previous poster summed up as ‘a means to an end’ rather well. The Jews are made up of lots of different peoples. I guess they can sort of be compared to Latinos, who can be of any race. So can Jews. There are Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jews, the Falasha (Ethiopian), and more recently, the Lemba, who are a South African tribe newly confirmed to have Jewish origins. Judaism is their indigenous religion, a religion that is unique to the Jews as a group. It is inextricably linked to their identity as a people. As are all indigenous peoples’ religions. That is as it should be. So it is not necessarily simply a set of beliefs, it (their religion) is also what informs them as a people (Jews). In that sense, you can compare them to the Yoruba of Nigeria, or Native Americans.

JenniferParticipantAll peoples have different muscle structures, not just from race to race, but from ethnicity to ethnicity as well. Our bodies are part of what makes us different from each other. Search the web for physical anthropology links.

JenniferParticipantActually, there are plenty of books on the subject of Black English, or Ebonics. You should get one. It is derived from various African languages, such as Ewe and Yoruba, which is why it has its own syntax and structure. It’s no different than Creole or Yiddish in that regard. Languages arise and change when different peoples come into contact with each other. Language is not a stagnant thing, it is extremely fluid, always changing throughout time. You do not speak the Queen’s English, do you?
