Jay C.ParticipantHow tacky to say you cannot say anything to upset black people without being considered racist. I do consider you a racist (borderline probably, but racist just the same), but that is not an automatic reaction to being offended. That’s my reaction to you. I assure you I’m offended by people all the time without thinking them prejudiced. Often the attitudes people display when they are around you are a reflection of the energy they receive from you. Maybe if you’re constantly being called a racist, you should examine yourself and stop attempting to place the blame on others.

Jay C.ParticipantI applaud your efforts to be more multiculturally sensitive. Some of the responses to this I’ve seen have been borderline racist, and I can’t imagine why someone would use this resource just to be negative. Back to your comment: there are words and issues that have a history that may not be obvious to people outside the situation. I’m sure you can think of a time you were defensive about something that may or may not have made sense to others, but that did not lessen the validity of your feelings. Also, as someone has pointed out, it’s important to look at statements in context. ‘Folks’ seems innocuous enough to me, but the tone, demeanor, actions and other statements surrounding the word may have been the real issue.
