I have been taking the pill for about a year and have not had any negative side effects. I haven’t gained any weight. I have had positive side effects, though, like a very regular cycle and short periods with only light bleeding. My periods used to be very heavy and would cause fatigue. I have almost no PMS now or cramps. It’s great. There are a lot of different birth control pills out there, so if you start taking one and don’t like the side effects, your doctor can always perscribe another one. On a side note, you should still use condoms to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases, whether you are on the pill or not. Even if you are monogamous and your partner says he is, don’t bet your life on it. The risk is too great. I don’t know how it is in Australia, but in the United States the highest rate of HIV infection is for straight people under 25.
