I’m bordering on ‘old fart’, but I can remember when ‘gay’ had no sexual or gender connotation at all. It simply meant ‘happy, carefree, joyous’. Now, as with many words such as ‘bad,’ the younger generation has turned the meaning completely around. It’s this kind of thing that makes linguistics such a fascinating study.

When her mother passed away in Mexico some years ago, some of the neighbors came in and insisted that my wife’s sister place her mother’s body on the floor. The explanation for this was that if the body was not in contact with the earth, the spirit would be restless and wander about. I don’t know if this belief is native to the Americas or was brought here by Europeans.
