Dear Amee; I am a natural blonde (no hightlights, no dye, no haircolor treatment whatsoever) of german descent. I do nothing to get my blonde haircolor — I have no roots, although some layers of hair are slightly darker than others, as natural blonde hair is very susceptible to sunlight, and ‘fades’ (lightens) very easily in the sun. My eyebrows, lashes, arm/leg hair are also blond, although I do wear makeup for definition. Without trying, (I dress conservatively) I attract attention from both men and women wherever I go, presumably because of my haircolor. I often get complimented on my great ‘highlights’, which aren’t highlights at all — just my hair being what it is. The reason there is such a fascination with blonde hair is that real blonde hair is quite rare — only 10% of the population is naturally blonde, with those numbers shrinking rapidly as the world population becomes more mixed/intermarried. As you’ve noticed, a lot of people who are blond as children get darker as adults, and only a few lucky ones keeping their natrually blonde color into adulthood. Those you work with who claim to be natural blondes might have been blonde as children, (thus considering themselves to be actual ‘blondes’)but now have to highlight their hair to keep it the color it was during their childhood. However, I do know of quite a few natural blondes, (those who do absolutely nothing to their hair to color it and it is still light enough to qualify as being blonde) even just among my circle of friends/co-workers, to assure you that yes, naturally blonde adults do exist — they are just quite rare, and thus, the subject of some fascination by the rest of the population.
