There are a lot of materials by reputable scientists that indicate just the opposite. Differences in the size of the petuitary gland in gay men for example. But science asside, you will find that most gays and lesbians will tell you that it’s by no means a choice, and many of them havn’t had any exposure to the subject prior to finding out that they temselves were gay — so it’s not learned either. We don’t choose to be attracted by the same sex, just as you don’t choose to be attracted to the opposite sex. In a society that still to this day frowns on homosexual behavior — in a society where being gay could cost you your family, friends, and career — I find it surprising that people would assume it to be a choice.

Well, I had never known another gay man until I was 20, and exposure to gays and lesbians came from trash TV — not exactly a positive immage of homosexuals to say the least. The subject was never braught up — I was never really exposed to it. Yet I know for a fact I’ve been gay for as long as I remember. My partner comes from a fairly religious family. Even now they have a hard time adjusting but again, there was no gay influences on his life either.

You’ll always have people who like drawing attention to themselves, but for the most part, gays and lesbians would prefer being treated just as everyone else is.

in reply to: Why do gays lisp? #24002

I’ve known several gay men, and only one that had a lisp, and it was just a speech impediment. I’ve known a couple of effeminate gay men too, but one was just naturally energetic. Some people do it because they feel more themselves that way. Others because it’s a way of revealing their orientation without actually saying it. But there are many gay men who don’t have lisps or who arn’t effeminate.

I tend to really enjoy the company of women, because for the most part they seem more open and accepting. While this may not be entirely true straight women seem less intimidating than straight men. It’s prettys safe to say that gay men don’t hate women.

I know several gay men who have had wives because it was what was deemed socially acceptable at the time. These same people had kids from the marriage as well. It’s a shame that these things happen, but society puts great pressure on people to be ‘normal’, though it is more accepting of late. All of these individuals were caucasian men living in North America, so it’s not restricted to foreign cultures.

Both of my parents were loving and supportive. My father comes from a French Catholic family, and my mother’s family is baptist. They were both happily married and remain so to this day. My partner’s family is quite similar — both loving parents, both still married.
