Indians can be a lot of races. India is sort of like the US. The people with brown complexions that you typically think of as Indians are racially, believe it or not, Caucasian. However about 2% of Indians look similar to people from China and 1% are of African descent. I believe, when Indians first came to the country, they were called ‘Orientals’ because they were from the East. That was around 1900. Then people were not sure what they were for a while, because they had a brown rather than a yellow skin. They also had facial features and bone structures like the white people and are anthropologically classified as Caucasians, which made it more confusing, because at that time non-white people didnt have the same rights as whites and ‘whites’ and ‘Caucasians’ were used interchangeably. So until 1975 Indians were classified as Caucasian. However, this afforded no protection due to minority status, so they lobbied to be Asians again. This just goes to show how race is something that is so ill-defined that it really doesnt make much sense to categorize people by race, now does it?
