Fiona-MacVaneParticipantFemale circumcision is more accurately labeled FMG or female genital mutilation. It is not mandatory in Egypt although it is sometimes practised there. It is more common in sub-Saharan Africa and although found in populations who practice Islam, it is not part of Muslim belief or practice. The world health organisation (WHO) is working very hard to eradicate FMG as it has serious implications for women’s reproductive health, making childbirth more complicated and postpartum complications likely.
