Emily25375ParticipantI was given an allowance in grade school and the amount increased with every birthday. The children in our family were told to use our allowance for non-essential items (CDs, movie tickets)and learned basic money management that way. If you blew all your money on one purchase, you had to wait a couple of weeks to accumulate more. Allowance stopped when you got a job (18 yrs old for me) and when I went to college I got an ATM card, a checking account and a credit card (one with my name but it bills to my parents account).
