Shirley, I wish there were an easy answer, but in my experience, women who delayed having sex with me ended up being long-term relationships. Whatever you’re comfortable with need never be explained or apologized for.

I am sorry that this disrespect has happened to you. Many men (and women, too, I bet) see a weight problem as an indicator that something else more serious is going on in your life, such as depression, poor self-image, etc. For that reason we are leery about getting close to you, same as you might steer clear of a man who needs to comb his hair (and for this you’d have taken a pass on Einstein).

Panic and kill ourselves? No we didn’t. My great grandfather owned a large wire and sheet steel factory in Cleveland in the 1880s & 1890s. He was killed (probably justifiably so) by labor organizers as he attempted to hire scabs during a strike. His daughter, my grandmother, ended up marrying a man who rose only to the level of vice president of a large food company, but owned the first Cadillac in Cleveland, or so the family story goes. They lost their fortune during the Depression. My father didn’t rise as high as his father, working in sales and advertising, but we had a Mercedes Benz in the 1950s. Mostly I have worked for local government, living a modest life, and drive a 1988 VW. Four generations downwardly mobile. Yet each generation has had a successively higher and higher level of social consciousness, artistic and literary achievement, civic involvement and activism. We may have become much poorer, but we also have become much richer in the important things.
