Dave26007ParticipantMaori in New Zealand migrated to this country around 800 AD. They believe that they orignated from a place caled Hawaiki that was further north in the Pacific. Debate amongst antropologists and historians still rages over where this homeland might be. Whaever the case, it is highly unlikely that Polynesians originated here. One theory that I have read about why many Polynesians are so big is that they travelled long distances by sea to reach the countries they currently live in. Some of the weaker (smaller) travellers died on the journey. Those who were able to store food as fat most efficiently tended to survive. Thus, their descendants tend to be bigger than average. Most Maori in NZ are no bigger than anyone else. However, a disproportionate number of Maori, Tongan and Samoan people excel at sport in this country (particularly rugby).
