Well this gay person is telling you that it is NOT a choice – it’s just the way you are. I remember having a coversation with my father shortly after I came out to my family. He said he wasn’t pleased with my ‘decision’ to be gay. I asked him to tell me about his thought process when he decided to be straight. Was it just to have children or did he want to better fit into society? He was stunned and indignent. He said he never even considered anything other than the way he was born. I then asked him why he thought things were any different for me as I didn’t make any ‘decision’ either – it’s just the way I am. I could almost see the lightbulb turning on above his head. That was many years ago and he now loves my partner of 7 years and makes sure he is included in all family events. Even in small town Iowa.
