Perhaps they assume either that you are of less than average intelligence OR that you are smart but not ambitious (i.e. that you don’t apply yourself or haven’t in the past.) Intelligence and talent are cheap and without hard work don’t count for all that much. People should certainly treat you respectfully in your work environment, but it’s not reasonable to expect that they should recognize your above-average intelligence until you actually do something with it.
