You might want to read a little on the history of the Church and how it became Catholic which means ‘Universal’…Mary became the conduit of conversion for many of the cultures that had the Mother Goddess as their diety before Christianity…perhaps your perception that Catholics prayed to Mary is in fact the cultural manifestation of the ancient desire to worship the diety in female form
