One time, when I was in the school marching band, a guy's shoe sole, which had been peeling, came off. I jokingly asked him if he got his shoes from Payless, and one of my friends at the time said, 'Hey, I shop at Payless!' Because I was aware of her financial situation (divorce in the family, deadbeat dad, etc.), I felt pretty dumb for saying that. Why I said it, I don't know; I guess it was just another case of foot-in-mouth disease, or something.
