CR31876ParticipantIt’s a matter of demographics. Hockey is a sport popular in areas of the United States and Canada that do not have a significant bplack population. Small towns in Northern states such a Minnesota, Michgan, New York, Vermont and Massachusets, and Canadian provinces such as Ontario and Quebec, have hundreds of ponds and lakes that remain frozen all winter long. In the United States, most people of African heritage tend to live in or near large urban areas, where skating rinks are few and far between. However, virtually every playground in America has at least one basketball hoop, and cities can fit playgrounds anywhere between buildings There are simply more whites playing hockey than blacks playing basketball.
About punk music: it came to America from the United Kingdom as an underground movement in New York City in the ’70s. Because a small cult of New York City dwellers, mostly progressive, alternative lifstyle (not gay) and college art students picked up the punk movement, it never really grew beyond that, and the peak of punk’s popularity came just prior to the peak of MTV. Therefore, the medium to spread punk across the American landscape didn’t ‘climax’ in sync with punk itself. Biily Idol, The Ramones and the Plasmatics are the few punk influences to have made it ‘mainstream.’
