BrianParticipantI can relate to this very much. Because I get similarly annoyed when people with whom I’m not familiar refer to me as ‘man.’ Americans in general are an informal people, but sometimes informality can be interpreted as disrespect. It’s the same as using Tu instead of Usted in Spanish or Tu instead of Vous in French. People would be offended by this initial lack of respect. So the problem as I see it is not the term ‘buddy’ it is the lack of respect/condescension associated with using the term with people you don’t know. In Europe it happens to me a lot and I check people right from the start. They quickly call me Mister, or Sir at least change their disposition.
