You would not believe how many times I have been in classes where racial debates went on between white students because the black students were afraid to speak up for fear of reprisal from a teacher whose motives for selecting this topic were suspect. Take the BLACK STUDENTS SIDE!Well what about the white ones. Take theirs too. (not litterally.) I am not saying go against your own personal beliefs or make obnoxious comments, but make sure it is clear that you are open to atleast one idea that may not be generally associated with white men. Open the debate with something that would make you feel comfortable if you were a student, but surprise them. Throw in a few comments that provoke thought, but don’t necessarily share your personal experiences or thoughts. Debates in my classes have usually followed this pattern: opening remarks from the teacher (who is always right and white) some obnoxious racist comments form several of my ‘white friends’ and closing remarks which declare the teacher’s whiteness and rightness. Please don’t do this to your students let it be a cliff- hanger ?????????
