Hi Robin- I’m a Roman Catholic Christian. I do my best not to force my beliefs or my personal moral code on anyone else. I don’t believe you are wrong, I believe you and I have different beliefs and ways of life- neither are evil or wrong, and we all can learn from each other. I do not believe you will go to Hell because of your beliefs and way of life. Unfortunately, although in the US the Constitution says we have freedom of religion, the laws you mentioned in your question are geared towards Christian ideas and attitudes, because that’s the majority belief in this country. People choose to follow the law so that there is less discord with the other people around us. In this country there are ways to change, propose, and discard laws- another belief system known as a republican democracy. There are essays about civil disobedience that might help you think of ways to change the laws that offend you. I can only hope that people around you recognize you for a good person, and not try to ‘change you’ into a ‘better person’ by forcing their beliefs onto you. I’ve caught quite a bit of flak for being Catholic, or being white in a predominantly black group of people, or being American in a room full of people from different countries. Good luck.
