I've been in the same situation as your girlfriend. This is not related to cultural differences or ethnicity. It's how you were raised, plain and simple. I was taught at a very young age not to steal from others. Eating another's food in large quantities without asking is inconsiderate, discourteous and uncouth. I've never done it, although I have had roommates of all different backgrounds and ethnicities unrightfully take food. I sympathize with your girlfriend, but please know that her roommate's manners, or lack thereof, has absolutely nothing to do with her being black. I would hate for you to think that this situation had a link to race. Nevertheless, I applaud you for asking about it instead of accepting a false truth. Most prejudiced people would have accepted it without inquiring; you didn't, and I respect that.

First, I don't think that all blacks are less open to listening to punk rock, classical,or country. I do not believe all whites support R&B, reggae and rap. I find many people of all races who are for and against the genres you mentioned. (I also have an aunt and mother who are avid country fans, my aunt having more than 300 albums.) I have seen children of all races idolize Michael Jordan. I have yet to make the acquaintance of anyone who chooses not to glorify someone based on race or gender. Because I don't know any whites who listen to reggae, and I constantly hear Bill O'Reilly detesting rap, should I assume that all whites do not support what you call 'black music.'?

Music is sacred and should not be boxed in because we have an uncontrollable urge to assign race to every aspect of society.

That's pretty odd. I think the people you formerly worked with are a little touched in the head. I have heard before of some people believing that that action is prejudiced, but it isn't. Some black women who feel that it is prejudiced probably feel that way because they feel you're 'taunting' them with your beauty. (Example: Beauty is defined in America as having straight, long hair...etc) In my opinion, your boss was wrong to reprimand you for that. They couldn't explain it to you because there is no reason. Just years of being brainwashed. I flip my hair, especially when it's in my way.

I agree with you on rap and hip-hop music. However, I can think of many other forms of music which lack melody and beauty. I feel that you are correct on the origin of this genre. For example, Public Enemy's 'Fight The Power' was a slap-in- the-face song directed towards 'White America.' Most rap/hip-hop music is meaningless, carrying no important message, such as many forms of pop music. (N Sync, Puff Daddy, Backstreet Boys, etc.) I'm not a fan of heavy metal, but just because I'm not, doesn't mean that those who enjoy it are 'not in their right mind.' I detest rap/hip-hop, but I also feel that you are unfairly targeting a specific genre of music because of the race of the originators. I doubt people 'convince themselves that they enjoy it, because they want to fit some image' considering that a surprising 70% of rap/hip-hop albums are bought by Caucasians. [A statistic stated by 'The O'Reilly Factor' at http://www.BillOReilly.com] 'Satanic' rock is just as destructive as rap/hip-hop, if not more. I have yet to hear anyone complain about Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Ozzy Osbourne, or his popular 'hit' show 'The Osbournes.' [I say 'hit' because I find it unfortunate that we're bored by quality shows like 'The Cosby Show' and choose to idolize shows like 'The Osbournes.'] I see it as the epidemic of double-standards. Moral standards should be enforced upon all people, not set aside for the 'privileged.'
