Traveling to other countries has really brought home to me how unfriendly and suspicious most Americans are. Mexico (outside of some taxi drivers and just about all the cops) has some incredibly friendly and good-hearted people. My sister and her husband were unable to cross a flooded river in their van once. The local people built them a raft on the spot and hauled them across using their mules! Being in Mexico also reminds me how out of shape and lazy most Americans are by comparison, so I’d add hard-working to the list. The worst things about the country? Their incredibly racist attitude toward their own Indians. (I was never perceived as Indian, ironically, because I was American.)

For the Philippines (outside of Manila), I’d say very friendly also, as well as curious and strangely shy around me. The general attitude was that one should be embarrassed to talk to foreigners because of shame over being poor. The worst thing about the country? The fear of crime in Manila that hangs over everyone.
