There is nothing ‘out of the ordinary’ about simply asking that no one call you what you don’t want to be called. Rather than disparaging this as ‘PC’, a better word is simple politeness. All Mexicans I know choose to call themselves that rather than have the ‘Hispanic’ label that was made up by outsiders forced upon us. Most ‘whites’ would probably prefer being called Irish, Italian, etc., rather than European or Euro-American, for that matter. If you want to find out what a person prefers, simply ask them politely. People who are ‘mixed race’ (the idea of race has no scientific basis, but that’s another post) like myself would likely prefer you not emphasize that, since everyone (including yourself)is ‘mixed’ if you go far back enough.
