A. SonnierParticipantHow dare you! The resources provided to children with disabilities are NOT waisted funds. These children have just as much right to receive an APPROPRIATE education as every other child in the system. I have a child with a developmental disability. He is very very capable of recieving an academic education with his non-disabled peers. However, an education is not just academic, it has to have emotional and social support to be an appropriate education. He deserves the resources to help him attain an appropriate education. My son has an IQ of about 120-so explain to me how these funds could be waisted?? Regardless if his IQ is 120 or 20, he has the right to receive an appropriate education-like any other child. As you stated, ‘The achievments of the disabled children rarely amount to much, so would it really matter if they received a substandard education?’ Right there that is telling me that you are not doing your job. All children have strengths, it is critical that these skills be focused on-give them an opportunity to become a contributing part of society. Of course that takes more funding. Most of these children might not go to college, they need to recieve adequate services in public education so that they might live independently and contribute to society. For physically challenged students, what about them? Do you not feel that funds should be allocated to provide them with entrance ramps or handicap accessible restrooms? That takes money and lots of it. Your comments sicken me. Not only that you make such ignorant comments but that you are an ‘educator'(and I use the term loosely) and molding children’s minds. Scarey thought! It’s apparent to me that you need to go back to college and focus on compassion and ethical components.
