when did the Irish & others become ‘white’?

    in America, historically, not all ethnic groups were considered 'white' at first.. often, Irish, Jewish, Italian & Eastern European/Slovaks were not considered in the 'white' mainstream.. but at what point in the 20th century did this gradual assimilation happen, and why, in certain instances, did they not have better solidarity with minority groups of color?
