recently there has been some discussion in my workplace regarding use of the term ‘people of color’–where did it originate, when, and why? as a euro-american with pale skin i had until recently been operating under the impression that this was an acceptable term to most people that might fit under it, for instance most (or at least a fair number of) african-americans; however, when i happened to use it in a conversation, an african-american colleague was angered and offended, and retorted: ‘what, do you think you don’t have a color?’ when i apologized for unintentionally giving offense and asked if there was a term that might be preferable, the colleague refused to offer one. i was wondering if these feelings are widespread, and if in fact this terminology is controversial.
