Why do Americans of African descent have a distinguishable speech difference compared to other peoples who have immigrated to the States who, after a couple of generations, have a common dialect with most of the population when speaking English? Is it a conscious choice to try to remain different . Will it always be so? I have heard discussions of how the voice difference has subjected people to discrimination but have never heard any reason why the diffence persists.
