this is a serious problem, so please consider: i am from a very mixed cultural and ethnic background, eastern european. i have found that both in europe and overseas (u.s., can., australia), when asking what i was/where i came from people were startled at being ‘unable to place’ me. i recently had a long conversation with a friend who wondered if such a ‘cosmopolitan origin’ would ever make me feel as if i had a home. – i do! i have my home where i live with my family, or course! despite of which i have friends and acquaintances who persist in trying to put me into one ethnic category only. i feel as if this was robbing me of the varieties of cultures that i have available, but i also noticed this was some kind of _need_ on their behalf, they were genuinely unsettled and in reaction sometimes over-assertive of their own ethnic descent or derogatory of my relatives’ exogamous behaviour. has anyone had similar experiences being classified as ‘mongrel’? or: how do you feel meeting someone who is from such a mixed descent? and if it bothers you: why? (footnote: 4 different grandparents by ethnicity)
