When the south lost the Civil War, many white confederate men didn’t want the now free slaves settling in their areas. They also didn’t want carpetbaggers and the Union Army, which was in charge of the reconstruction of the south, to stick around. So they organized into local groups and began lynching those who disagreed with their goals of returning to the days when white men ruled without question and blacks were slaves.
