SWParticipantWhy does it seem that African-Americans don’t appear to care if they’re blocking traffic when talking to a friend in a car, or even crossing the street on foot? I travel city streets several times a day, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone stop their car in the middle of a busy road to chat for minutes at a time, and force two-way traffic to get by in one lane. Then they get upset if you honk your horn, or tell them to get out of the way. If I saw a friend walking or driving by, I would never, ever think of just stopping in the middle of traffic to talk. It’s not only inconsiderate, it’s dangerous, esp. if kids are crossing, etc. The same goes for opening doors into traffic without looking, and crossing against a light. There just seems to be no consideration for their own safety or others. I have come so close to hitting pedestrians, and taking out opened doors because I can’t maneuver or stop in time. This behavior fosters nothing but resentment. It makes me angry for two reasons…one, at those who have an inflated sense of self-importance; and two, for the fact that it adds to the the very few racist feelings I have.
