I am a singer who often works at weddings and other private events such as bar mitz-vahs. I often wonder if any Jewish people find the gross expenses of these rites offensive. In toasts and speeches I hear assertions of their humility, earthiness, and selflessness. I am confounded. I am currently planning my own wedding and understand the desire to create a pleasurable event. However, at some point I think it’s got to becomes obscene and obscure any real meaning.
