Why do some African-Americans use the somewhat loaded term ‘appropriated’ when describing others’ adoption of or affinity for elements of African-American culture? For example, if a white suburban teen favors rap music, doesn’t that help make the American pop culture landscape generally more diverse? I don’t feel that my Jewish culure has been stolen by non-Jews who eat bagels. I think that it’s a means of influencing larger society.
