L MarchMemberI suppose the homosexuals who consider it a disease or a sin (and some do, I don’t know how many) would probably welcome it. Those who don’t probably wouldn’t. I’m curious how this ties into bisexuality – as a bisexual woman, do I have some genetic influence on that? It doesn’t run in my family, but I might not know. I’d be most worried, I think, that if a genetic marker is definitively identified that abortions would be made on fetuses that had it!

For example: the Christian and Jewish scripture forbid homosexuality by divine mandate, with specific punishment prescribed in the Torah for homosexual activities, and eternal fire promised in the New Testament for the same. But if there is a gene for homosexuality, then there is validity to the claim some have made that ‘God made me this way.’ And what true and righteous God would punish someone who was doing what He had made them to do? Becoming absolved, therefore, of responsibility for their sexual orientation, they become exempt from punishment. This is the motivation for finding ‘the gay gene.’

Ken C.MemberRegarding the statement, ‘…Becoming absolved, therefore, of responsibility for their sexual orientation, they become exempt from punishment. This is the motivation for finding ‘the gay gene.’
Or it could be curiosity among the gay and non-gay scientists involved, since identifiable genes have NOT been required to demonstrate biological differences between groups of gay and straight persons. It’s not as if science hasn’t contradicted religious authority before (see Galileo). In recent years, there have been replicated studies comparing groups of gay males, lesbians, heterosexual male and heterosexual females; as groups they can be distinguished by scientists. Fingerprint patterns are determined in the first weeks of prenatal development (different even between twins), and the fingerprint patterns of gay men as a group are similar to those of women as a group. The inner ear structures in lesbians amplify soft, transient sounds less well than those in straight women, though better than those in straight men. The index finger is usually shorter than the ring finger in straight men, but tends to be nearly the same length in straight women, and is generally shorter in lesbians (though not quite as short as in straight men). Biologists realize that traits can be biological without being genetic. Besides, the idea of some that simple cases of homosexual orientation cannot be biological seems strained when we already know that even larger sex atypical variations occur in human nature, as in rare cases of hermaphroditism, intersexed children or genetic males with androgen insensitivity who develop as females.

Jeff-CParticipantOnce the ‘Gay’ gene is discovered, it will most likely be weeded out by parents during early pregnancy. This weeding out won’t be some kind of curative procedure performed on the fetus but rather an old fashioned abortion. Cheaper to toss out the batter and start over than to try to extract already blended inredients. Lots of food for thought here.

Normand19951ParticipantEach respondent has asserted that sexual orientation is unique to an individual and should be accepted by society. This is an example of what is meant when some say that homosexuals want ‘special rights.’ There is no room for debating what constitutes ‘normal’ or what is ‘abnormal,’ only assertions that God (never mind what the Bible says, that is a matter of interpretation also) made some with one orientation and others with another orientation and yet others with many orientations. In other words, what people do among themselves is nobody’s business. This is sexual relativism. But like all forms of relativism, this also has a deadly flaw; if a person truly believes that sexual orientation/preference is unimportant and nobody’s business, then they must also support straights who engage in gay-bashing based on their sexual orientations and preferences. If a restriction is created such that only consenting adults should be able to engage in consensual sex, you have to ask what about the person who is a born pedophile or a born rapist. The evidence supporting these sexual orientations as genetic in origin is no weaker nor stronger than the evidence supporting the genetic origin of homosexuality.
