ACC25125ParticipantFor people who are Jewish and Muslim: Can you see any way out of the current mess in Israel and Palestine? Also, for non-Jewish and non-Muslim Americans, in light of the World Trade Center attack, why are so many of you so shocked that we are finally paying for our uncritical support for Israel all these years? These many deaths from terrorism, as sad and horrible as they are, should not have come as a surprise since they were payback for Arab deaths with weapons and money we gave to Israel.

c.t.ParticipantFrom an atheistic non-American: I recommend you read up on Bin Laden’s training by the CIA in the Afghanistan war camps (go to the BBC network’s background information page on Bin Laden, or, failing that, The National’s web site). If anything, this is a home-grown problem of U.S. Cold War politics.

John29171ParticipantIn the Bible, Israel is God’s country. If the United States was not a Christian country, we would not back Israel up. We do so in order to help protect God’s people.

Allan31422ParticipantJust a jumbled summary of what has gone on in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Please jump in if I missed anything or I am just wrong =) Palestinians and other Islamic people are mad about the Israelis just moving in, and rightfully so, but killing over it will not solve anything. Spilling blood over such a holy place is no way to honour it. Palestinians are fighting people that have been stepped on by many groups for millennia, so if they think terrorist attacks will scare them away, they have another thing coming. The need for a Jewish nation where the ancient Israel was is a justified one. The Palestinians displacement is brutal and rightfully hated. Muslims cannot win an a military battle against the Israelis especially with European and U.S. support. The support given by these two bodies is also justified as they seen the Jewish plight first hand. HOWEVER, Israel failed to respect the amount of power they were given and Europe/U.S. should have been more critical of Israel’s use of such power. Its very hard to find middle ground in this if both cases are justified. In the end it just shows that military insurgency was just a miserable way to set up Israel, as it gave no regard for the people of the area. It is obvious that Israel needs to respect Palestinians more. The frequent abuses they suffer are absurd. The only action they can take to get a peaceful resolution is for Palestinians to be like Ghandi and just stage a protest in the middle of an Israeli commercial center by just sitting down en masse and fasting/praying for peace. The more people the better for the protest, other Muslims, Jews and Christians would be great and be a better example over the universal outrage of the violence. Protesters may be beaten or shot for doing this but it was the same case in India decades ago and it all ended with India’s independance. Anger has a stranglehold on both sides and they can’t see straight. Now the conflict is more about revenge. Violence will continue even in peace just like with the group ‘The Real IRA’ did after the peace in Ireland. The key is to get peace now and deal with the rest together. Only a few people that lead each side actually want violence to continue but somehow the ones at the top end up sending out the troops.

Stephanie27779ParticipantTerrorism’s MAIN target is not to hurt anyone who supports Israel. From the recent Moscow theatre hostage incident, the terrorists didn’t attack because Russia supported Israel. Cause it doesn’t. Actually, for many years Russia has been selling weapons to the Arab countries. Sure, on the surface level, supporting Israel might get someone into trouble when faced with a terrorist, but as you listen to the news, you hear that Bin Laden has announced that Canada can be a good target for future attacks as well, despite of it being a multicultural country, and despite of the fact that a lot of pro-Palestine people live here, and in fact, quite a few terrorists were from Canada as well. Terrorism has no reasons or logic. Just ignorance and fear of the unknown. And as for the Americans. They shouldn’t be surprised because ‘they should have expected to be hurt due to them supporting Israel’, but because they had been all living in a bubble, thinking ‘EVERYBODY loves us! We are Americans! We are invincible!’. Disneyland is not real life.

Joe30622ParticipantSigh. This question was written three years ago and yet is still relevant. Firstly, US has not sided unilaterally with Israel. Billions of dollars in aid have been given to the ‘Palestinians’ (most of which had straight into the personal bank accounts of people like Arafat). Every time something happens, Israel gets pressured to return to the negotiating table. American press demonizes Israeli retribution to the people who murder her citizens, yet the murderer himself/herself gets a full multipage write-up and gets counted as one of the ‘victims’ of the bombing in question. Secondly, Israel is a democracy. None of the other countries in the area is (until now, that we are trying to get the new Iraq off the ground.) The US simply wants to spread democracy – we know it’s good for business! Thirdly, there never was a country called ‘Palestine.’ For the US to support ‘Palestinian’ causes over Israel makes less sense than supporting the territorial claims of Native Americans who actually do have a heritage that is thousands of years old. Fourth, Israel does not want to kill Arabs. Israel is full of people trying to work out how to ‘make peace.’ Yet in the ‘Palestinian’ territories (and in other Arab countries) their version of day camp involves learning how to shoot semiautomatic weapons and the values of martyrdom. (Yes, there is real evidence of this.) One wants to empathise with the ‘Palestinian’ people referred to as ‘refugees,’ but come on. Israel has absorbed many hundreds of thousands Jews over the course of its few years of existence, from Europe after WWII, from all of the Arab countries after they (the countries) expelled them (the Jews) because of Israel’s existence, and from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia. Are you telling me that some thirty-odd Arab and/or Muslim nations around the world cannot absorb the ‘refugees’ from a small strip of land about the size of New Jersey? Refugees, I may add, who only ran away because THEIR OWN LEADERS said to? (Israel had announced ‘stay in your homes – we don’t want to kill you’ and those who did became citizens. The Grand Mufti propagated the story that everyone who would stay would die.) Thus, the only rational position is to support Israel.
