Linda J.MemberTo African Americans: Is your work ethic related more to tasks and goals, or to relationships?

Jennifer31027ParticipantPersonally, I can’t choose between the two. My work ethic seems to spring from a combination of both choices. With regard to relationships, my work ethic is reflective of the relationship I feel I have and strive to maintain with my community, my family and myself. I am one person who has benefited from the hard work and good faith of others, from the uplift of certain values and from the stability provided by the bedrock of positive choices and collective responsibility. As many have provided this for me, I feel an obligation to work at something meaningful, work as hard as I can, and to the best of my ability. Call it ‘doing my part.’ I consider that a goal, one that informs on every task I undertake to a certain extent.

Gene21625ParticipantIs it possible for one ethnic group to have the same work ethic or variation thereof? If this answer sounds strange, consider the question.

Ataul A.ParticipantYour question is odd. It seems as though you are looking for a handful of people to answer for the entire African American population. If someone with different ethnicity asked you a question regarding ‘your’ work ethic I assume that you would be surprised and you would answer either, do you mean as a woman, an Episcopalian, an American? You could not answer for this entire group of people because that is not possible. Nor is it possible for a handful of African American men and women.

JulieParticipantWorking styles & work ethics are usually divided along gender lines-according to the experts- with males being task oriented and females being relationship oriented. There is plenty of data online about this. Also, why would anyone think that African Americans have a single work ethic? BLACK PEOPLE ARE INDIVIDUALS with different upbringings, life experiences, motivations, circumstances, and morals JUST AS WHITE AMERICANS ARE INDIVIDUALS. My department consists of six people (myself included). My co-workers spend a great deal of time on personal telephone calls as well as online shopping and smoke breaks. Am I to assume from their actions that ALL WHITE AMERICANS are this way? I think not.

MelissaParticipantDepends on the individual, how can you expect a group of individuals to give you an answer that will speak for an entire ethniticity? I can tell you that being black and working in corporate america I’ve got to work twice as hard and be better educated than my white co-workers since they seem to have the same ignorance that you have.

Kelly R.MemberMine is more for tasks and goals. But i am speaking from the standpoint of a highly educated Black person. I think that, in general, Black people tend to be very collectivist in that we emphasize the importance of family and relationships.
