I’ve noticed that a lot of women in this part of the country – and I’m certain elsewhere, too – have really bad haircuts and hairstyles (i.e. teased or feathered hair, mullets, bangs, etc.). Most seem to be over 35 years of age. This strikes me as a paradox, considering the numerous women’s magazines available in which every other article seems to be about hairstyles. My question is this: When they go to their stylist, do they ask for that hairstyle? What compels them to go for gaudy and tacky styles as opposed to straight, natural, shoulder-length hair? Better yet, do they know that it looks terrible?

Often people seem to stick with the styles of their youth, which may have been very attractive at that time. For instance, 15 to 20 years ago, the teased/feathered/mullet style was trendy. They likely associate that with what was attractive in their younger days and are not inclined to update. It’s not limited to hair; often these same women need to update their cosmetic styles, too. But it’s not limited to women. Hockey player Jaromir Jagr seemed to have a mullet long past that style’s prime.

I’m sure these women have no idea their hair looks terrible. Why don’t you just say something next time you see a woman with a hairstyle that you consider unattractive? I’m sure she would be very grateful to you.

Wow, Christian, I wonder what your hair looks like. What makes you think every woman would look great with straight, shoulder-length hair? Some women can’t grow their hair that long. It would be unruly, or it would be impossible to care for. Also, what the heck is a mullet? I recently cut several inches off my hair because I was ready for a change. It was long, straight and below my shoulders. I looked at old photos of myself and searched on the Internet to get ideas. I took the ideas to a recommended hairdresser, who helped me pick a style that would be good for me. I’ve gotten rave reviews – except from my ex-husband.

Annie, A ‘mullet’ is a haircut where the hair is straight, bangs in front are short, and the back is down the back of the neck and cut even. It’s basically a shag. It is the latest most dated haircut….kind of the leisure suit of haircuts….a remnant of the 70’s/80’s. The term supposedly comes from the movie ‘Cool Hand Luke.’ There are even web-sites devoted to taking pictures of people with this haircut and posting them for ridicule.

Speaking as a woman over 35 – our hairdressers (and society) are the ones who tell us that ‘straight, natural, shoulder-length hair’ is not appropriate for ‘women our age.’ One of the nice things about being this age, though, is that what 28-year-old males think of your hairstyle just isn’t quite that important anymore. I wear my hair so that it’s comfortable, easy to care for and appears attractive to ME. ‘Bad’ hairstyle is a really subjective opinion.

As a hairdresser for the past 20 years, I can say with some authority that a large portion of people opt for a budget hairdressing experience or they colour and cut their own hair. (This is actively encouraged by the advertising campaigns of beauty companies) Some people save up and pay for an optimal service, which should outlast 3 budget visits anyway. And…not all people see their hair as a priority! Some people are quite neurotic about their hair, and some people simply see it as an extension of the fashion of the day. It can be frustrating to look at, but it only really matters to some people! I find it amusing.

I think that U are just the natural type. Just because it is not appealing to you does not make it ugly or tacky. Yet, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!!

It’s not just the midwest. Change can be difficult for some. There are women you can tell the year they graduated from high school from their haircut. Unless you live close to major metropolitan areas, change is very slow — so are hairstyles.

Well, maybe to them they think its beautiful. Long, striaght hair is not always whats sexy. MAybe from your perspective, but I’m African American and whether your hair is not striaght or curly its beautiful. I’ve been taught that all hair is beautiful especially my culture and I;ve accepted that. If the female prefers to wear her hair short or terrible from your perspective how is is bothering you? Shes not asking for your opinion if you;re not paying for it. It;s her hair and its up to her on how she wants to wear it.

I also live in Boston and noticed that in other parts of the country there are a lot of women with bad hairstyles. However, in Boston, women usually seem to have ‘normal’ hairstyles. I don’t know what women you are talking about, but for the most part it seems like women in Boston take better care of their hair than others.

To the woman who suggested going up to a stranger and telling them you don’t like their hair: I don’t suggest you do this. First, I’m sure these women must like how they look or they would change it. Second, I’m sure they couldn’t care less what you think of their hair. And finally, who made you the fashion police? Why should all women have the same boring hairstyle just because ‘Christian from Boston’ likes it?

You know what, Normal straight hair is uncut. Not just to you shoulders. Some woamen/girls dont cut their hair because of their religion. It frustrats mewhen guys think that a girl has to look a certain way, be a certain weight, laugh a certain way. Most people probably dont care if you think thir hair look tackey. I am a strong pentecostal woamen, I have never cut my hair and I love my hair. When its long you can do anything with it. as appose to short hair…its ugly and boring. Well anyway I got to go. STOP CRITISIZING WOAMENS HAIR! HOW WOULD YOU DO YOUR HAIR IF YOU WERE A LADY? NOT THAT WELL!!!
