My kids go to school with two children whose race I am unsure of. The children’s mother always wears clothing that covers her entire body, except her face and hands. My children would like to know why she does this, but her children do not.

The child is most likely Muslim, but it is extremely important to note that since Islam is a religion and not a race, that child could be of any race. There are Muslims of all races. Many people incorrectly equate Muslim with being Arabic. The vast majority of Muslims are in fact not Arab, such as most Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Malaysians, Indonesians, Turks and Iranians. There are many Arabs who are Christian, though most Arabs are indeed Muslim. Observant and Orthodox Muslim women dress more or less in the manner you describe. However, many Muslim women, even outside the West, do not dress as such and leave their heads uncovered. A good example would be to compare Turkey and Iran, both of which are non-Arab nations. Turkey has a strongly secular government and society, and women are actually banned from wearing head-coverings in public, so as to keep Turkey ‘modern,’ as its leaders see it. Iran, on the other hand, which has a very conservative Islamic government and society, requires all women to cover their heads, although Iranian society has moderated considerably over the last few years and it is not uncommon to see some, especially younger, women show some hair. Most majority-Muslim nations, such as Malaysia, Egypt and Jordan, have varying numbers of both Muslim women who cover their heads and other Muslim women who don’t.
