Augustine23554ParticipantWhy are there such violent protests in the streets of large cities over ‘globalization’, when a world body is meeting there (WTO, World Bank, etc.)? I may not like the concentration of wealth and resources in the hands of a few, I might oppose genetically modified foods, and I might prefer to support local independent businesses, but it’s not something I would be willing to get arrested, beaten, or tear-gassed over. The Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, I understand completely; that was a war, people were getting killed, and our role there was debatable. I also understand the anti-abortion protests; these people view it as killing unborn babies. But globalization? Are these people of a certain age who are trying to recapture the 1960s protest ethic and just need an issue to rally around? Or are they really that upset about it? (By the way, I read MOTHER JONES and UTNE, so don’t accuse me of being insensitive to progressive social justice issues; some I agree with, some I don’t.)
