The President of the United States is lives in the White House with no expenses whatsoever, for example free housing, food, transportation, (air and car) haircut, laundry, wardrobe, entertainment, not a single solitary dollar of his personal money spent while he is in office. While taking into consideration his debt before office, why not continue to pay his monthly bills, (mortgages, car, etc.) and not give him a salary until he is out of office, then his pay will be based on his performance?

Good luck pursuing that idea. JUdging the “performance” of a pres. would be a political joke, depending on the prevailing party in Congress. The pres. is performing a very important job (don’t get me started on the Bush administration) and deserves compensation. I feel the same way you do about his “room and board” and expense account, but those are perqs. While I might not agree, I believe the argument is that since many of our presidents have legal and/or business skills that would allow them to earn huge salaries & perqs in private business, we should pay them well and give great benefits; otherwise, only the indepently wealthy will be able to serve. Nobody goes into the presidency for the money. It’s the power and, hopefully, the desire to improve the lives of Americans.
