Why must I do what the Christian God wants?

To Christians: You insist that everyone must follow the rules given to you by your God. Why? You can be obedient to Him if you want; you chose that religion. But why force me to obey him through legal manipulation (blue Laws, laws against same-sex marriage, anti-gay laws, laws forbidding assisted suicide, etc.?) According to your views, I’m going to Hell anyway because I’m not a Christian, so what difference does it make?

I apologize. You are right; I didn’t mean to imply that *all* Christians are trying to force everyone to follow their morality. I should have specifically addressed my question to those Christians who are lobbying to have their views of right and wrong written into law, or who support such action. I frankly don’t understand it. (And not only because it often makes life difficult for me and my family. For instance, because many Christians believe that their God forbids ‘males to lie with males’ homosexuals are only completely protected from discrimination in 6 states. Why? I’d like to understand the reasoning behind it for a book I’m writing.) And, Adriana, our Constitution was specifically written to ‘Protect the Minority from the Tyranny of the Majority.’ So the simple fact that Christians outnumber all other religions in this country (if it’s even true) shouldn’t make any difference to the law.

The overwhelming majority of people in America are Christian, so pretty much we Christians get to decide the laws, because we outnumber everyone else. It’s not fair to the individual, but it’s a lot fairer than living in a country where everyone does what the king says. It’s in Christian nature to want to save you, anyway, even when you’re hopelessly lost on the path to Hell. Those Jehovah’s Witnesses are infamous for their door-to-door teaching, but you have to admire them for their determination and faith. Another thing: I’m not sure what the Bible says, but I think it would be very shallow of God to not admit you into heaven simply because you are not Christian. God exists in many religions, not just Christianity. However, maybe in the Christian heaven, there are only Christians? Hmmm… Segregation in the afterlife??

    1. I don’t insist that anyone do anything unless it affects me directly.
    2. I am not forcing you or anyone else to change his/her behavior through any of the means listed, and I don’t ever intend to. Nor do I support the attempts of others to do so.
Do not assume homogeneity in opinions, politics or ethics among Christians or any other group. In other words, stop generalizing and be more specific about your targets.

For what it’s worth, I couldn’t agree more. They have no right to impose their views on other people.

I am a Christian, but I would never force my views on anybody. Politics and Christianity don’t mix. The people who do this (i.e. Fallwell) are in the minority, and at the very least they do not reflect the stances of the majority of the people I know. Although I may disagree with you, who am I to tell you how to live? If you were to ever accept Christ, it would be out of your own decision and not because of societal elements.

OK, first of all, YOU Christians don’t make the laws. Haven’t you ever heard of separation of Church and State?? Politicians make the laws, and if you think for one minute that politicians are a bunch of honest, church-going Christians, than you’re even more delusional than I thought. Thank God for that separation or we’d end up being lead by a bunch of closet-Nazis like George ‘I love executing Black Folks’ Bush. Now there’s a fine example of a Jesus touting, bigotted hypocrit. I’m sure he’s a fine role model for the rest of YOU Christians. You’re only 17, it’s not too late to develop some ideas for yourself.

I don’t admire Jehovah’s Witnesses for their determination or their faith. I respect a person’s right to practice their religion and I respect those who are faithful to their beliefs. But I find it very disrespectful to others when people preach door-to-door. I am very offended when stangers try to push their religion onto me. I understand that these people truely believe that their religion is the only way to true salvation, but that is a truely arrogant belief.

Wow Robin! I’m sensing a LOT of hostility in your question. First, let me please state that I’m only going on my opinion. I don’t insist that anyone follow the rules given to me by my God. I’m obedient, and so are some of my friends and family, but I don’t push my religion on anyone. There are some Christians that do insist on trying to ‘convert’ (for lack of a better word) everone they come in contact with; that is part of their devotion. However, please do not catagorize all Christians as such.

Hi Robin- I’m a Roman Catholic Christian. I do my best not to force my beliefs or my personal moral code on anyone else. I don’t believe you are wrong, I believe you and I have different beliefs and ways of life- neither are evil or wrong, and we all can learn from each other. I do not believe you will go to Hell because of your beliefs and way of life. Unfortunately, although in the US the Constitution says we have freedom of religion, the laws you mentioned in your question are geared towards Christian ideas and attitudes, because that’s the majority belief in this country. People choose to follow the law so that there is less discord with the other people around us. In this country there are ways to change, propose, and discard laws- another belief system known as a republican democracy. There are essays about civil disobedience that might help you think of ways to change the laws that offend you. I can only hope that people around you recognize you for a good person, and not try to ‘change you’ into a ‘better person’ by forcing their beliefs onto you. I’ve caught quite a bit of flak for being Catholic, or being white in a predominantly black group of people, or being American in a room full of people from different countries. Good luck.

Christianity entirely transcends race. But by this rationale, since white people are the majority in America, it’s only natural that historically oppressed minorities ‘get what’s coming to them.’ Tyranny of the majority is present all over the world, and God hates it no matter what it’s painted. And if I may speak frankly, the majority of this ‘majority’ you speak of are Christians only when it comes to superficial demographics.

Damn straight! Why do christians get all the say in most western countries? I probably shouldnt answer, as I’m on your side, but I fully agree. I live in New Zealand, and our national anthem is ‘God Save New Zealand’. This is obviously the christian god, which I do not believe in. Why should I ask him to save my country? He never saves anything, espically little children dying of cancer and such like. No country should have a formal religon and children should not be baptised, they should be free to choose. I’m glad I’m going to your so called hell. It means I don;t have to mix with the likes of christians who will be proved wrong in the afterlife.

So what if you people outnumber all the others in America… its just another way that you force all your beliefs upon others, thinking you’ve got all the answers… instead of discovering your own path and drawing your own conclusions, you put your complete trust in some book or some preacher… now do you want to be sheep being led, or actually trying to lead yourselves out?… and whats this bull with trying to save me? save me from what, exactly? maybe the evil green leprechaun will take me to hell when i die and all the demons will sodomize me round the clock?? i dont really have much against religion in general, although i dont agree with most of it… however, the worst part about it is that it has lost its purpose, becoming like exclusive clubs… oh sure they bring people together… but only people of the same faith…. people of different or no religions are harshly excluded… it’s like a ‘join us or die’ deal… haha, see ya in hell then

I would like to let you know that I am not going to put you down for being a Christian or not. You can go to heaven if you are a Christan, Catholic, or what ever other type of so called religion there may be. All you have to do is accept Jesus Christ in your heart by asking him to come into your heart and forgive you for your sins. You don’t even have to go to church just know in your heart that he did for you and everyone else on the Cross. That is why you can ask for forgiveness and he will accept you however you may be.

Robin, The reason is that this Country has a strong Christian Heritage, and Christians make up the Majority in America. Originally to be a Citizen of the United states, you had to be all of the following: Free(because there were White slaves as well back then-we just don’t hear much about it), White, 21, Christian, Land owner, and Male. Women, Blacks, Slaves (of any race), Jews, and many others were not allowed Citizenship originally. So essentially, it was set up by White Christian Men, for White Christian Men. Tim
