DanParticipantWhat is the goth philosophy? What sort of religion(s) do goths embrace? Why do you prefer the gothic style over what is considered “normal?” Why and when did you decide to go goth? Any insight is much appreciated.

DerrickParticipantI’m not Goth, so I’m giving my experience from having Goth friends and reading about subcultures. Goths can be any religion they choose – I have many Christian-Goth friends – although most are drawn to earth-based religions. There is no ‘Goth manifesto’ or ‘Goth dress code’ or style. Black clothes don’t make the Goth. Sure, most Goths you might see will be dressed in black, and some might dress in a Victorian style, but they choose those clothes for the same reasons any person chooses their clothes: it appeals to them. Goths don’t make it their life’s goal to be ‘different,’ except for the dabblers in middle school and high school. They try to find beauty where most people find ugliness. But all in all, Goths are like any other group: each have their own personal definition of who they are.

Rob S.MemberA good way to find out about this is go to a site called ‘Goth Primer.’ The guy who runs it is very open-minded. To get there go to Yahoo. Click on Society and Culture, via Cultural Groups, via Goth. His is ‘Goth Primer.’ As you are a Christian like me, click on the one called ‘Enclave.’ That’s about Gothic Christians. I am not a Goth but have interest in it.

ChaelleighParticipantI’m not Goth but have dealt with a few Goths while in graduate school. I found this site via American Library’s Teen Hoopla Site: http://www.gothics.org/subculture/ It is quite interesting and has some very good articles.

LillyMemberI was labled goth in highschool, and am still labled goth now at 23. I never concidered myself goth. I started wearing black, not beacause I wanted to be different, but because I wanted to look slimmer. It just kind of grew out of that. I listen to music I can identify with, and have a circle of friends that understand me. I may look different, with my many piercings, tatoos, and black clothing, but really I think that I am just like everyone else. I had no idea there was a gothic club! Maybe I should sign up…lol
