EddieParticipantWhat does “nigga” mean? Why do people call me that? I bleed the same color any white person does, and I am as equal as anybody on this earth.

CarinaParticipant‘Nigga’ is more of a slang word these days. It’s like calling someone ‘dude’ or ‘homeboy’. But some people use it to hurt – I guess ‘nigga’ to them is a put-down because it reminds us of the slavery years and how we were less than human back then. But by using that term toward each other in a joking way, we diffuse it a little. It becomes less hurtful, and hopefully one day it can lose all hurtful intentions.

Deenie25807ParticipantIf they call you nigga and they’re black or latino, chances are they’re being friendly. Blacks and Latinos are often called the same things since we’re both minorities. If a white person calls you nigga, you most likely just got insulted.

Paul S.ParticipantThat would all depend on who ‘THEY’ are. With black people, and apparently Puerto Ricans in NYC, it is generally a term of endearment.
