Why do poor people dress well

    In terms of methods used to negotiate one’s identity, poor people are no different than any other class of persons. That is, just as it’s clear to suburbanites that ‘fitting in’ means keeping one’s lawn nicely groomed and presenting oneself as morally upstanding and happily coupled, urban communities function in much the same way. In other words, all communities have some standard, often unspoken, that conveys to others that they properly belong. In urban communities that particular value is on clothing, apparrel, and cars while in higher socioeconomic communities more value is placed on where one vacations, home renovation, size of home, lawn care, kid’s involvement, etc… Either way, in most communities people live beyond their means. In that regard, the poor are no different.
