Why do people think Italians are part black?

Why do some people insist that Italians are not Caucasian? I happen to be largely of Sicilian origin and am frequently asked if Sicilians are part black. It really makes me laugh because I’ve never seen a southern Italian/Sicilian who looked partially black. I’ve always considered myself white and most people think I’m either Greek or Italian. Additionally, many Italians are light-complected and resemble French or German people. It amazes me when people try to claim black blood in Italians.

I know it might hurt to know that you carry some African blood in your veins. There are black Italian. Several years ago they crowned an Italian woman who was black Ms. Italy. Some people love their olive skin tone – where do you think the skin tone came from? We all have a mixture of different race. Don’t let it consume you that you might have some African blood; remember, the first people were from Africa.

People are asking that because Sicily was at one time conquered or ruled by the Moors. The Moors are of mixed race. If you look up Moors they may be called something else now. Also, it depends on what source – some will not even claim to have negroid blood in them. It all depends on where you read about them. If you go to other countries, they don’t consider themselves white, either. The United States does. Mediterreaneans are not white. Also, look at some Sicilians, for instance John Turturro. He has kinky hair. Nelly Furtado is Portuguese. She says on an album prior to ‘Loose’, that they tried to make her appear white. I can’t recall the song. When I feel better I will post it. Italians and others like them (Greece, Spain, Portugal, and even France), look more exotic than the English, Nordics and Irish. Besides, so what if someone thinks Sicilians have African blood. What is so wrong with that? John Turturro is a handsome man. Nelly Furtado is a beautiful woman. This gets on my nerves because people get so defensive if someone claims they have negroid or African lineage/heritage, but they will claim every other ethnicity. For example, ‘I’m Chinese, German, and Hawaiian’. They sound proud, as they should be, but you rarely see people being proud of having a black ancestor. There is a big problem. I personally, don’t know why you are so offended.

A quick history lesson: At some point – I think the 10th century – an Africian tribe called the Moors raided southern Sicily. The usual things happened: looting, destroying, conquering and, of course, rape. So, long story short: In addition to having that gene from the early humans on earth, many Sicilians have ‘black blood’ from just over 1,000 years ago. This is why Italians tend to hate black people. This is why we Italians get a great tan, and why we have curly hair. Most people, even Italians, don’t know it.

These are probably the same people who insist dark-skinned Pakistanis and Indians are ‘black.’ There are a lot of really ignorant morons who can’t see past skin tone and eye color, and who live in their own little lily-white bubble in which all Caucasians are blond or sandy-haired and blue-eyed; and anyone who isn’t must by definition not be Caucasian.
