Why do only Muslim women cover up?

If Muslim women are covered to prevent men from regarding them as sexual objects, why aren’t Muslim men covered so women won’t do likewise? Wouldn’t it be easier just to raise boys not to regard women as sexual objects? Why are women expected to carry the entire burden?

I’m not of the culture, but I’ve had fellow students from that background explain it to me this way: The practice was around before Islam and wasn’t regarded as ‘Islamic’ until after western colonialists started taking over large parts of the region in the 19th century. Most less conservative Moslems still don’t think of it as an Islamic practice. And actually, among some people like the Tuareg, it IS the men who cover up and not the women.

DEAR ROSE, I AM SO HAPPY THAT YOU HAVE ASKED THIS QUESTION,I AM A MUSLIM BOY AND I WILL TELL YOU WHY. AS A BOY,I CAN TELL YOU THE DIFFERENCE WHEN I LOOK AT A GIRL WEARING A TIDY JEANS OR A MICRO,AND WHEN I LOOK AT AGIRL WEARING LONG SCIRT OR A BAGGY JEANS.WHEN I LOOK TO THE GIRL WITH THE MICRO THE FIRST THING THAT WILL ATTRACT ME TO HER ARE HER LEGS NOT THE BEAUTY OF HERE FACE OR THE STRENGTH OF HER PERSONALITY ,THIS IS AN INSTINCT IN MEN THAT WE CAN’T DENIE BUT WE CAN CONTROL.DO YOU KNOW THAT THE LESS NUMBER OF GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN RAPPED OR SEXUALY HASSARED OCCURED IN THE ARAB MUSLIM COUNTRIES,THE NUMBER DIDN;T BEGIN TO INCREASE TILL LATELY,WHEN THE MUSLIM GIRLS BEGAN TO DO LIKE THEIR WESTERN COUNTERPARTS.THE PROBLEM OF THE WEST(AMERICA+EUROUP)IS THE MATERIALISM. YOU MAY HAVE READ THE NOVEL (HARD TIMES)BY DICKINS IN THIS NOVELL YOU WILL FIND EVERY SIN COULD BE DONE BY A HUMAN AND THAT IS BECAUSE OF MATERIALISM. CONCERNING THE MUSLIM BOY ,HE MUST COVER THE AREA BETWEEN HIS STOMACH AND HIS KNEES,THE MUSLIM WOMEN DOSEN’T OBLIGED TO COVER HER FACE,ONLY SHE MUST COVER HER HAIR,AND ANY DECENT LONG UNTIDY CLOTHES WILL DO THE JOB. I KNOW THAT WOMEN RIGHTS IN ISLAM CAUSE US A LOT OF PROBLEM BECAUSE MUSLIM WOMEN LOOK UP TO THE WESTERN WOMAN,THEY DON’T KNOW THAT THE WESTERNS SUUFFER AS MUCH US THEM AND MAY BE MORE BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY. THERE IS ONE THING I WANT TO SAY THAT THE PURPOSE OF SEX IN AN ISLAMIC UNDERSTANDING IS NOT JUST A TEMPORARY PLEASURE BUT IT IS THE FIRST STEP TO ESTABLISH A FAMILY,SO THERE IS NOT ANY KIND OF MAKING LOVE BEFORE MARRIAGE,AND IF SO WE WILLTURN INTO ANIMALS. IT WAS A PLEASURE WRITTINGTO YOU AND IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO WRITE TO ME.AND REMMEBER THAT WE ARE ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN HUMMANITY

As a Muslim boy, I can tell you the difference between when I look at a girl wearing tight jeans or a micro-skirt and when I look at a girl wearing a long skirt or baggy jeans. When I look at the former, the first thing that will attract me to her is her legs, not the beauty of her face or the strength of her personality. This is an instinct we can’t deny, but can control. Did you know that the number of girls raped or sexually harrassed in Arab Muslim countries did not begin to rise until recently, when Muslim girls began wearing clothes like their Western counterparts?

Concerning Muslim boys, we must cover the area between our stomach and knees. Muslim women aren’t obligated to cover their faces, only their hair, and any decent, long, loose clothes will do.

I know that women’s rights in Islam cause us a lot of problems because Muslim women look up to Western women, but they don’t know that Western women suffer as much as them, and maybe more, only in a different way.

In regard to sex, in Islam it is not just a temporary pleasure but a first step to establishing a family. So there is not any kind of love-making before marriage. If so, we will turn into animals.

As a young Muslim woman i can tell you that I would rather cover my entire body than walk around with a skirt half way up my but. Men respect me more because they see tha t i dont have to dress provocatively to get attention. Just think would you want a man just to want you for your body or the way you look. No. You would want him to look at you for the woman that you are the smart intelligent woman that you are. Dont be modest be respectflul. So we hide our Modesty and have respect for yourself.

God has fashioned the female into a work of art and in order to protect us He has given the commandment to cover. This is nothing new as the Christian style of dress is similar (historical). We do not fall victim to the lastest fashion trends or hair cuts. We are focused on God, family and community.

A lot of non-Muslims ask about Muslim womens’ clothing and why they are ‘burdened’ to wear the scarf to cover themselves, while men don’t have to. To begin, all three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam, preach modesty. Orthodox Jews dress modestly, and women do not expose arms and legs to the public. Catholic Nuns and Mennonite/Amish women also cover up. Islam, being of the same tradition as Judaism and Christianity, also commands its followers to be modest in their dressing. Women are asked to cover their bodies, including their heads. Face veils are not mandatory. The purpose of practicing modesty is to prevent unwanted attention from other men. Islam recognizes weaknesses in humans, and strives to prevent things that could lead from human lust, such as pre-marital sex, rape, unwanted pregnancies and abortions. People ask, ‘ We can understand why areas such as the genitals and the breasts need to be covered, but why hair?’ If we turn on a television today, or open a fashion or women’s’ magazine, we will see tons of ads about hair and hair products. Shampoos, gels, hair colors are plastered all over. The reason for this is that we might not consider hair to be an erotic body part, but subconsciously, hair is considered attractive. The proof is in the fact that we spend so much on hair products. Hair is considered a symbol of youth, health and beauty.

Although men are not commanded to cover up as much as women, there is still a clothing requirement. Islamic law commands men to cover the area between the navel and the knee. Someone could say, ‘Well, that’s still less than women have to cover up.’ The same applies to Western societies. While men can walk around topless in public areas of North American cities, women can’t. This is because a topless woman would attract a lot of attention, much like a woman not wearing a scarf in a society that wears scarfs would attract attention.
