Why do Canadians think they don’t have an accent?

Everytime I’m watching a movie or show I point out people whose English I think ‘sounds Canadian’. I go on the internet and look up these people and about 90% of the time they are from Canada. My American friends don’t hear the difference. My Canadian friend says that she doesn’t either. Why do people think that Canadians and Americans sound exactly the same?

Unless you’re referring to French Canadians, I think they sound pretty much the same as midwesterners, except for a few Scottish pronunciations, e.g., pronouncing “about” – aboot. Just Curious
