Wang YiMemberI attended an academic seminar in Texas last year. I payed 200$f for the membership fee and they gave me a receipt. But I found they did not keep a copy of the receipt. I was wondering if it will lead to some troubles for them without having a copy or at least a record of the name. It turned out to be true! When I submited my paper, they said I’m not a member.I have to show them the receipt by email the photo of the receipt. Why do Americans not keep a copy of the receipt?

Ann L. LowensteinParticipantSo, from one instance of stupid, unprofessional behavior by one person at one symposium, you have deduced that all Americans are idiots who never keep a receipt. Wow, you’re a frickin’ genius. Sadly, in the real world, Americans keep the receipt almost obsessively, sometimes for years beyond when they need to. The nut I dated for a while in college had gas receipts dating back to his Sophomore year in high-school because his Daddy-waddy tolded him he should keep ALL receipts he EVER RECEIVED for seven years due to “income taxes”, and he literally nearly had a stroke when I accidentally threw out a shoe-box full to the rim with old fast-food and convenience store receipts dating back to when he was 14. BadKarma!

ShirleyAveryParticipantMost reputable businesses keep copies of receipts. They’re required to for tax purposes. Some “cash only” businesses like some nail salons don’t give receipts. As a customer, I always save sales receipts, at least until my monthly bank statement comes and I reconcile it. I keep receipts for large ticket items for years or until the warranty runs out. I know lots of Americans are careless about this and get mad when they can’t return an item to a store without the receipt. It’s a bit of a hassle to keep reciepts in good order, but worth it. Just Curious
