This has been a perplexing question for me. I used to live in a university town in New York. The neighborhood was populated with mostly university students, of which a lot were from overseas. I had a beautiful Afghan Hound and most blacks would cross the street or go up into a driveway until I passed by. All the others students would walk right up and pet the dog and ask questions about him. Why did the blacks move away from such a peaceful looking and beautiful dog? I now have a much smaller dog that is known for being friendly with children, yet some blacks panic when he barks. Why?
