Why do judges refer to the courtroom as ‘my’ court, when in fact the system belong to the people? And why does the bailiff announce upon the judge’s entrance to the courtroom, ‘All Rise’ ? I find it offensive to be required to stand in honor of another human being. I honor God only and find that only He is worthy of my standing to my feet. I never abide by this practice. Who started it, and what does it mean?
