I think it depends on what parents think “success” is. I’m sure parent always want their son/daughter to succeed in life and help them in whatever way they can. On the other hand some parent and some children do not care about each other. As Hilary says, “It needs a village to raise a child”. But I think first parent has to think what they should do to make their child successful.

I know many college educated middle and upper middle class blacks and Latinos. However I also live in a city that has a large population of poor blacks and Latinos. While there may be a cultural element, ( i.e. rural Mexicans who tend to encourage their sons to drop out of high school and go to work at menial jobs), it has more to do with mindset than race. It is said that Asians tend to value education, but there are also plenty of Asian-Americans whose parents stress proximity to family over actual job success. Pretty much any culture where kids are expected to stay in the same neighborhood as their parents will not be as successful as those where people are free to pursue opportunities where ever they exist. But it’s not always racial. There’s a big difference between my American-born Latino mayor with his law degree and a farmer from Oaxaca who might not care if his children can read and write. And yet, statisticians would put them both in the same racial category.

Actually, I think it is immigrants that tend to be more successful. The sorting out by races is due to the fact the immigration happens in waves. Most immigrants are highly motivated people, or they wouldn’t leave where they were to come here. They are, in that sense, self-selecting for success.
