Can someone please explain to me how bisexuality came to be equated with irresponsibility, unsafe sex, an inability to be monogamous and betrayal of the gay and straight communities? Yes, sometimes people claim to be bisexual to be ‘trendy,’ but why must this characteristic be attributed to all bisexuals? I’ve been out as a bisexual person since I was a junior in high school. Since then, I’ve never ‘passed’ as straight or gay. I don’t sleep around or practice unsafe sex. I don’t do threesomes upon request. I’m not ‘undecided’ sexually – I’m simply able to fall in love with people of either gender. I’m not conflicted and unhappy, nor am I poison in a relationship. Where did these stereotypes come from?

Anyone who says bisexuality connotes ‘looseness’ was probably burned by a bisexual person. I don’t have anything against it. In fact, three of my women friends call themselves bisexual — oddly enough, they are all married. For them, bisexuality is a gateway to participation in the gay community.

It’s not odd that your married friends call themselves bisexual. Being bisexual does not mean you are actively dating/sleeping with members of both genders. It simply means you are attracted to both. Whether you act on that attraction or not has no bearing on whether you call yourself bi.

I think this has a lot to do with how bisexual women are portrayed in the media – especially pornography, but also in venues like The Jerry Springer Show. The media usually portrays bisexuality as something kinky and desirable to straight men. A monogamous lesbian is someone sexually unavailable to men and possibly threatening, so we don’t see many in the media. Instead, we see oversexualized, promiscuous bisexual women, who of course are attracted to men.
